History

Our origins date back to 1982 when North Otago Road Metals Company Ltd became involved in contract work for Coal and Energy. Francis Mining was formed in 1985 when the Welcome opencast mine, located in the Reefton area of New Zealand’s West Coast, was purchased from Coal and Energy in 1984. Between 1986 and 1989, several other mines were purchased around the Greymouth and Reefton areas. Through the acquisition of Coal and Energy and in turn Thomas Brown Ltd and Washdyke Coal in 1989 Francis Mining expanded mining operations and gained the industrial and marketing arm of these companies.

In the earlier years Francis Mining was predominately a producer of coals for the local New Zealand market.
